WWTP Basel – Groundbreaking ceremony
The groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation and extension of the WWTP Basel was held on 23rd January 2019. It marked the start of the largest and arguably most important sewage treatment plant project in Europe. By 2024, when the new WWTP Basel goes into operation, more than 20 million people along the Rhine will benefit directly or indirectly from the enhanced quality of the river water.
The WWTP Basel will not only be one of Europe's most modern plants, but innovative solutions and processes will greatly improve the purification performance of nitrogen compounds, phosphorus and organic trace substances. With investments running to over CHF 295 million, the new WWTP Basel will be extended and almost completely renovated by 2040, enabling the plant to meet future industry and development demands in Basel city and the region.
HOLINGER is particularly proud to be part of this landmark project. We look forward to using our experience and expertise to help improve water quality – from Basel to the North Sea. We will be working on this challenging and rewarding project together with ProRheno AG over the next 5 years.
