In Winterthur in November 2021, HOLINGER AG carried out the event “5ab5i” and the topic was “the sponge city”. With over 50 participants from municipal and city administrations as well as from cantonal offices, the event met with great interest. In our context, the term sponge city refers to a climate-adapted water management concept for settlement areas, which combines various interdependent approaches and measures. These include runoff reduction, heat reduction, biodiversity promotion and open space design. The presentations and an online survey were a valuable basis for lively discussions. The topic is clearly timely. People are aware of the increasing urgency in municipalities and cities, where the status of implementation varies widely and the demand for inputs and implementation references is high.
